PITYRIASIS ROSACEA AT A GLANCE
One of the common forms of Rosacea is the Pityriasis
Rosacea. Pityriasis Rosacea is separate form of Rosacea which
is often mistaken as eczema or ringworm. It is widespread among the people
and the major drawback is that, it is very hard to treat. This form of
Rosacea develops mainly between the ages of 10 and 35.
It stats with a big pink patch on the chest, back or groin with scales.
Mostly it develops as a pink rash that lasts for many weeks. In 75% cases
it occurs as a single and isolated oval patch with hard border called
the herald patch. Within some time, more patches appear and a distinctive
pattern is formed which like an inverted Christmas tree. Unlike Rosacea
that affects the face most, Pityriasis Rosacea rarely appears on the face.
Except the main patch, all other patches are nothing but small rashes.
Sometimes the skin eruption is extremely widespread and severe.
ROSACEA-THE LIFE DISRUPTING SKIN AILMENT
Rosacea (pronounced as ro-za-she-uh) is a common
skin ailment which is more often than not, misunderstood.
It affects about 45 million people all over the world. It has been found
that it affects mostly the people of Caucasian origin though other ethnicities
also suffer from it.
Rosacea commences as erythema i.e. ruddiness of skin due to capillary
congestion. The disease starts from the centre of the face and gradually
spread to cheeks, forehead and nose. Though not very common, it can also
affect neck, scalp and ears. It is a chronic disease which progresses
unless treated in the earlier stages. Once it starts growing, some other
symptoms can also be seen. These include red dome shaped papules, pustules
etc. It can cause Telangiectasia, where the blood vessels of the face
get dilated. If Rosacea is not treated for long, it can cause Rhinophyma
that is red lobulated nose. The eyes are the most affected part as they
become red and puffy.
ROSACEA DURING THE PREGNANCY
Rosacea doesn?t adversely affect the pregnancy. The disorder is not life
threatening but there is one persisting fear that the child may suffer
from Rosacea in the later stages. The Rosacea during the pregnancy increases
due to release of different hormones in the body.
During the pregnancy, the Rosacea may see a marked increase as the mother
cannot use any type of topical or oral medicine for Rosacea. Most of Rosacea
medicines contain isotretinoin which can cause permanent birth defect
in the fetus. Malformation of body or brain may occur. The woman suffering
from Rosacea must discontinue taking any medicine for Rosacea at least
two months before she tries for getting pregnant.

then the condition deteriorates and many complications occur. One of the

big tumors. These bumps make the appearance of nose very unsightly. It
